Service Leader

Martin Smith

Nationally recognised for his forward thinking work in Outdoor Learning leads the team. Martin has worked in various educational settings for over 35 years in both the state and voluntary sector.

Martin is currently chair of the English Outdoor Council and led the development of the Council’s most recent publication ‘High Quality Outdoor Learning’. Martin has also been Chair of the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel and co-author of a number of outdoor and environmental learning resources.

SOLAR Development Manager

Andrew Smith

Andrew has a degree in Sport Management and a lifelong involvement in sports.

He has worked in sport development and management within the public and private sector.
His extensive work gives testament to his passion for enabling young people to experience the opportunities and benefits of sport and the outdoors whilst offering the highest level of customer service to clients and partner organisations.

He is also the main contact for the Outdoor Learning Team

PSHE and Character Development

The PSHE Advisory Team

The PSHE Advisory Team have over 20 years of experience in teaching and supporting teachers and schools to develop practical, quality responses to social and emotional development, character and risk management for young people.

From backgrounds ranging from teaching (primary and secondary), research, health promotion, therapeutic intervention, SEN and dyslexia specialism, sexual health and drug and alcohol and public health consultancy, inspection and accreditation, the team is well equipped to support you in a broad range of subject areas.

Swimming

Claire Moores

Claire is the School Swimming Manager, and has also taught children to swim for many years successfully, facilitating core life skills.

With over ten years operational experience she is passionate about the needs and goals of the clients and specialises in attaining achievable targets for the national curriculum to schoolchildren.Managing a number of successful projects including TOP-UP to Water safety week, focusing on every child having knowledge of water safety and self rescue actively reducing drowning incidents in the UK.

Adventure Team

Marcus Broad

Marcus Broad is the Adventure Team Manager.

He is a windsurfing, sailing, powerboating and canoeing instructor and holds many other outdoor qualifications.Marcus has delivered adventurous activities to a range of clients for nearly 20 years both in England and various other European countries.

Marcus is passionate about getting young people into the outdoors to experience adventure and outdoor education activities.

Risk Management

David Thompson

David is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner with over 11 years’ experience in supporting schools with their health and safety compliance.

He has a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health Management which he studied at Nottingham Trent University. His philosophy is that schools should be able to manage risk sensibly in an uncomplicated manner so that they can concentrate on teaching and learning.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Helena Cresswell

AAP_LOGO_DofE_Gunmetal__2Helena has been The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Officer for Nottingham City Council for the past 5 years, but has been part of the SOLAR team for the past 15 years!

She is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Award, as well as providing assistance, support and advice to leaders and participants.

Helena has a HND in Leisure Management, she is a BOF (British Orienteering Federation) Level 1 coach, qualified cheerleading coach and is a qualified YMCA Exercise to Music instructor.

In 2015, Helena was the winner of Nottingham City Council’s GEM Awards for ‘Outstanding Customer Services’.

Sport

Nick Robb and Beckie Mason

Nick graduated from the Sports Science and Administration degree course Nottingham Trent University in 1994.

He has been employed at Nottingham City Council for the past 22 years working initially within Sports Development and since 1998 within PE & School Sport. His current role involves delivering the Governments School Games programme and working with all City Schools to develop a comprehensive PE, sport and physical activity programme for all young people in Nottingham.

Beckie has been involved in sport from a young age, she competed and was part of the British Gymnastics squad for 9 years. Beckie is a Level 2 Gymnastics Coach, Level 2 Netball Coach, STA Swimming Instructor and Personal Trainer. She has a love for most sports and likes to keep fit and physically active. Beckie has been the School Games Organiser for Nottingham City with a Primary focus for the past 5 years and thoroughly enjoys working with the local schools delivering competitions and healthy lifestyle initiatives.
